The Malta Permanent Residents Scheme, which granted Malta tax residency status to qualifying applicants, was suspended in early 2011 but shall be replaced by five new arrangements which are intended to provide for and to address the various requirements of persons who may seek to establish their residence in Malta.

The purpose of the Malta Permanent Residents Scheme was to attract high net worth individuals to move to Malta. Nevertheless, despite its relative success, the Maltese government ultimately concluded that the scheme had failed to reach the desired objectives – resulting in the scheme’s suspension as aforesaid.
