Transport Malta, the Authority responsible for the Malta Ship Register in Malta, has reported that as at the end of December 2014 Malta’s ship registry saw a growth of 13.6%, which is equivalent to over six million gross tonnes and a growth of 18% in yacht registration, totalling the number of merchant vessels under the Malta flag over 2,500, making the Malta Ship register the sixth largest in the world and the largest in Europe.

2014 has been a record year for the Malta Ship Register, in which solid growth and improved technical performance of the registered fleet has consolidated Malta’s position as a European leader in the maritime sector. Malta has also consolidated its position on the Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU White Lists.

The Malta Flag also registered positive results in respect of Port State Control Performance during 2014, thus strengthening the quality of its registered fleet and its commitment towards safe, secure and clean shipping.

Improved results were also registered with regard to the registration of superyachts. The Malta Flag has registered an increase of 18.1% in 2014 in the registration of superyachts of over 24 metres in length, totalling the registered number over 400.

The fact that the Malta Flag administration has managed to concurrently increase both its growth rate, and enhance the technical performance of its registered fleet further confirms that adopting the strategy to focus on quality.

This further consolidates Malta’s register as the flag of choice for international ship-owning companies which confirm Malta’s reputation as a leading maritime hub. Consequently, the Maltese register is securing it position as a world leader with regard to ship registration.
