‘Abandoned’ seafarers find remedy

The seafarers of the MV A Lady Bug, a Panamanian flagged vessel have been granted a warrant for the arrest of the vessel by the Courts of Malta.

MV A Lady Bug has on board over twenty seafarers, who were ‘abandoned’ by their employer (Taiwan company) and the vessel was left drifting off Malta. They were left stranded with no fuel, unpaid wages and limited water and food. The seafarers are claiming over €100,000 in unpaid wages and compensation for their repatriation.

Now, with the vessel under arrest the seamen will now be able to file a law suit in the Maltese Court for their unpaid wages and if the employing company does not settle the dispute, this would merit further action which would eventually result in the sale of the vessel.
